I was not satisifed with the results obtained.Maigret felt surly. He was already dreaming of retirement on the Loire, and here he was having to explain to the Assize Court why he hadnt closed the investigation when the case went to the Grand Jury - the case against Gaston Meurant. It was quite simple: the facts didnt fit the characters. You couldnt (if you knew him as Maigret did) imagine the little picture-frame maker cutting his aunts throat for money and smothering a small child for good measure, whatever the evidence. But how to explain this in the solemn, depersonalised, unreal setting of the Assizes?

And how might Meurant react to the unpleasant evidence that could clear him?
